For babies 0-18 months, this program includes lap and bouncing rhymes, short stories, songs, and other fun activities. The formal part of the program runs about 20 minutes with a playgroup afterwards. We even provide the toys!
For kids 19-36 months, Toddler Storytime takes advantage of kids’ growing motor skills to do more action songs, rhymes, and fingerplays. We share stories, songs, and other group activities for about 30 minutes and do a simple craft afterwards.
For 3, 4, and 5-year-olds, we offer Preschool Storytime which features longer books and flannel stories, games, songs, dancing, puppets, and shakers. A craft follows.
A drop-in storytime for all ages. The program includes books, songs, rhymes, puppets, flannel stories, and a craft.
Frequenty Asked Questions
Do I need to sign up in advance? Many of our storytimes require pre-registration - and they fill up fast! Please view our current storytime session or call the children's room for specific dates and times. The first two days of registration are restricted to residents of East Greenbush and Schodack only*. Slots remaining after the initial resident-only registration will be open to anyone.
Do I need to stay with my child during the program? Yes, participate with your child and have fun! Parents who are listening to the stories and showing interest in books are wonderful role models for their children. Please plan to visit with other parents before or after storytime.
What should I do if my child is not paying attention or starts crying? It is not expected that your child will particiate in every activity. Sometimes children just like to watch what's going on. However, if they see you participating, they eventually will too. If your child becomes too restless or unhappy, step outside for a moment. Come back in when your child is ready to return to the group or try again another day.
Can I bring snacks? Please save snacks for another time. Children are better able to participate in storytime activities if their hands are free and they are not distracted by food. Also, sharing can be a problem for families with dietary restrictions. Do, however, feel free to nurse or bottle-feed babies.
Can I bring my older child to Baby Bookworms? While siblings are welcome at our programs, we do choose stories and activities based on the target age for a specific program. Siblings of different ages may be under or overstimulated, so please plan accordingly.
Is there storytime when it snows? If East Greenbush schools are closed due to inclement weather, we cancel storytime. If they are delayed, please call ahead to see if we are still having your session for that day.
